StratIS standard PC recommendations – 2021 Edition

I’m writing this handy guide for business owners looking at upgrading their Business Computers in 2021. Everything below is based on what we would be recommending for general office use cases. If you have a Line of Business software that you depend on, then we would generally defer to their recommended specs so you have the most reliability and maintain vendor support.

The Office Worker

We usually think of someone who spends 5-7 hours of their day working on the computer. They probably are pretty avid users of Microsoft Word and Excel. They might have their work life organized in Outlook. If you look at their Chrome or Edge browser, it is probably neat and organized, with 3-8 tabs open for things they are working on or apps they are logged into. They may also have a Line of Business software, but it’s very focused on what it does and lightweight in resource usage.

Our recommendations would be for a PC with:
CPU: Core i3 or Core i5
Memory: 8GB
Hard Drive: 256GB Solid State Drive

Some other “nice to have” peripherals would be
– A power bar with surge protection or a small battery backup
– A decent monitor (24″ IPS, we usually recommend a BenQ, Dell, or LG)
– A nice office chair that promotes healthy posture and ergonomics

The Multi-Tasker or Office Admin

We usually think of someone who spends the majority of their work day putting out the fires. They know their way around Microsoft Word and Excel. Everything they do is probably in a schedule in Outlook and there’s probably a couple draft messages that they’re in the middle of composing. They might be in the middle of making a new PowerPoint presentation. Teams, Slack, or Messenger has an notification in the taskbar. And you might cringe a little if you look at their Chrome or Edge browser, it is probably a bit of chaos. Multiple windows of dozens of tabs. They probably also have a Line of Business software open and may be where most of the businesses activities are organized and executed.

Our recommendations would be for a PC with:
CPU: Core i5 or Core i7
Memory: 16GB
Hard Drive: 256GB or 512GB NVMe Solid State Drive
(NVMe drives are 4-6x as fast as a normal SSD)

Some other “nice to have” peripherals would be
– A decent battery backup with at least 20 minutes of runtime and auto shutdown software
– Dual monitors (24″ IPS, we usually recommend BenQ, Dell, or LG)
– Dual Monitor pole mount stand to reclaim some desk space and organize cables
– A comfy office chair that promotes healthy posture and ergonomics

VIP's and Executives

VIP’s and execs shouldn’t be slowed down by their technology. We usually recommend laptops with all-day batteries and a single cable docking solution for when they’re in their office. VIP and exec’s needs can vary quite a bit and they generally need access to business data quickly so we spec machines accordingly.
We usually recommend LG Gram’s, HP Envy, or Dell’s XPS laptops as they offer 13″,14″, 15.6″, and 17″ devices that can power through the entire day on a charge, and are super portable due to their light weight.

Our recommendations would be for a Laptop with:
CPU: Core i7 or Core i9
Memory: 16GB-32GB
Hard Drive: 512GB or 1TB NVMe Solid State Drive
(NVMe drives are 4-6x as fast as a normal SSD)

Some other peripherals we routinely provide for a VIP or exec’s office would be:
– A powered docking station with a single cord hookup. (Thunderbolt is AMAZING)
– Dual monitors (27″ IPS, we usually recommend BenQ, Dell, or LG)
– Dual Monitor pole mount to keep a clean and organized desk
– Desktop charger for their mobile devices
– A comfy office chair that promotes healthy posture and ergonomics
